The Center for the Book is located in the Special Collections Branch of the Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Library System. School classes visit the Center and receive a presentation of the history of writing and books and a tour of the several replica printing presses, including a Gutenberg, owned by the Center. Thes…e presentations and tours are conducted by volunteer docents. Each child in the class is able to print a page on one of the presses, and has the opportunity to make their own book with materials provided by the Center

1. GET THE BUMPER STRIP

Get ready to publicize State General Obligation Bond Issue “B”. Show your support by getting a Yes on Bond B bumperstrip and putting it on your car. The Bonds for Libraries Political Action Committee has printed a thousand bumperstrips, which will be available at the PAC table at the New Mexico Library Association Conference in Ruidoso. There is a suggested donation of $1.00 to defray the printing expense. You can also request bumperstrips from the PAC at Bonds for Libraries Political Action Committee, 1380 Rio Rancho Blvd SE #172, Rio Rancho, NM 87124 or emailing contactus@bondsforlibraries.org.

2. WEAR THE T-SHIRT

Another way to show your support is by wearing your Bonds for Libraries t-shirt at the opening session of the NMLA Conference. If you were at Legislative Day, bring your shirt to Ruidoso. Let’s show ALA President Camila Alire our support for Library Advocacy. (See the attachment). There are still a few extra-large and one double extra large t-shirt available at the PAC table for $12.00. Wear them in your communities too, especially at upcoming budget meetings of local governments, school boards and college regents.

3. GET BOOKMARKS, ETC.

Come to the PAC table and see examples of bookmarks and other publicity materials you can use locally.

4. BID IN THE NALSIG SILENT AUCTION

The Native American Libraries Special Interest Group is again raising money to support the bond campaign through a silent auction at Conference. Check it out!

5. GIVE MONEY. ASK LIBRARY SUPPORTERS TO GIVE MONEY

Election campaigns are expensive. The purchase of a group of 25 spots on a local radio station can run between $300 and $1,500. A single drive time spot on KKOB can cost $200. The PAC will prepare English and Spanish language spots for local use. But money is needed now to have media available when and where they are needed. Remember that early voting starts on October 5th, and that more than thirty percent of voters will have voted by Election Day, November 2nd.

For more information, check the PAC website at http://www.bondsforlibraries.org/

The G.O. Bond Bill, S.B. 1, was amended in the House Taxation and Revenue Committee. They restored the library bond distribution to $2 million each for public, academic and school libraries and $1 million for tribal libraries. The amended bill passed the House this afternoon on a 46-19 vote. It now goes back to the Senate for concurrence.

S.B. 1 is now in the House Taxation and Revenue Committee. $1.75 million each for academic, public, school & tribal libraries. NMLA Legislative Advocate Larry Horan believes that the Committee will not want to change the amounts again. With the progress made on the budget bill, legislators are eager to complete the work of the Special Session.

The Gov. has changed the Special Session date to Monday March 1. More time to contact your State Legislators asking for their support of a GO Bond for Libraries in the amount of $7 million.

Money for our purchase of materials depend on a GO Bond issue for 2010. Act now!

A Senate and a House version of a 2010 General Obligation Bond Issue are progressing through the Legislature. Of the two, the House version is preferable. The two must be reconciled and passed before the end of the session next Thursday, February 18th. Urge your legislators to support House Bill 226, which provides $10 million for academic, school, public and tribal libraries. Senate Bill 113 provides only $7 million. See the texts of these two bills on the Bonds for Libraries website.

Senate Bill 113 was heard by the Senate Finance Committee on February 9th, amended and given a do-pass recommendation. It will be considered by the full Senate on Thursday or Friday. House Bill 226 was heard by the House Voters and Elections Committee on February 9th, and is awaiting a hearing by the House Taxation and Revenue Committee. When that happens, library supporters should attend and wear their yellow t-shirts.

The New Mexico Library Association will hold its annual Library Legislative Day on Thursday, January 28, 2010, to show support for library funding and a 2010 library bond issue. The event will begin with an orientation at the Main Santa Fe Public Library, 145 Washington St. at 8:30 am.
For those attending the orientation, please enter from the staff door that faces the parking lot in back of the Library. Attendees may park at the Library lot free until 10:00 a.m., but must move their cars by 10:15 a.m. The City’s new parking garage next to the Convention Center on Federal, across from the Post Office, charges a maximum of $8.00 a day. It is 2 blocks from the Main Library. There will be snacks and beverages at the meeting.

The special Library Day T-shirts sponsored by NMLA and NMCAL will be distributed at orientation, with a suggested donation of $12.00.

The Library will provide a shuttle at 9:45 a.m. to take attendees to the Roundhouse. There will not be a return shuttle. The Capitol is just over 1/4 mile from the Library. (Be aware that if you plan to try to find a parking place near the Capitol, it is near impossible and the parking enforcement does issue tickets regularly.)

Thanks to Pat Hodapp, Santa Fe Public Library Director, for making these arrangements.

For New Mexico Libraries

The Legislature is being asked to support a bill authorizing Academic, Public School, Public and Tribal Libraries to be included in the November 2010 statewide GO Bond election. We are asking that voters be asked to approve a $20,250,000 dollar bond package which will fund the purchase of books and other resources.

Once again, as in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008, this bond has the potential to make a huge difference to all New Mexico libraries, big and small. All New Mexico citizens from Kindergarteners to Senor Citizens will benefit from funds included in this GO Bond.

This 2010 Libraries GO Bond request breaks down as follows:

1. $6.5 million for academic libraries

To be distributed on a formula basis by the Higher Education Department to all academic libraries in the state. This amount will allow academic libraries statewide to purchase supplemental library resources, including books, equipment and resources for academic libraries statewide.

2. $6.5 million for publicly funded school libraries/juvenile detention libraries

To be distributed both with a minimum per school amount and a per student allocation by the Public Education Department. This amount will allow the purchase of resources including library books and library materials resources for public school libraries statewide.

3. $6 million for New Mexico public libraries

To be distributed on a per capita basis to New Mexico public libraries by the New Mexico State Library. This amount will fund the purchase of books, electronic resources, equipment and planning for public libraries statewide.

4. $1.25 million for Tribal libraries

To be distributed on a per capita basis by the New Mexico State Library for supplemental library resource acquisitions, including books, equipment, planning and resources for tribal libraries statewide.

We ask all library supporters to urge their legislators to place a library bond issue upon the November ballot. The bill will be introduced by Rep. Ed Sandoval.

This 2010 Bond proposal is endorsed by the New Mexico Library Association, the New Mexico Municipal League, the New Mexico Consortium of Academic Libraries, the New Mexico Task Force for School Libraries and the State Library Commission.
